Fertimetro, a new a sensor for the soil fertility estimation, will also be presented at Fruit Logistica. It is an invention patented by the University of Padua and is compatible with iMETOS 3.3.
The device is inserted in the ground to measure soil fertility in function of the progressive weakening of cotton and silk threads, due to the microbial activity. The system uses 8 threads: 2 from silk and 2 from cotton (not pre-treated), 4 others similar, but impregnated with nitrogen and potassium phosphate.
The relation between the different breakage times of the threads provides a set of information regarding the type of bacteria present and the mineralization time of the organic substance and therefore about any nutrient deficiencies and soil activity.
To complete the offer of information gathered in real time, the Fertimetro proposed by Pessl Instruments is combined with soil temperature and soil moisture sensors. The system is compatible with all the latest devices iMETOS 3.3 (weather stations and other data loggers), which communicate to the platform FieldClimate through standard GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, CDMA, Bluetooth, WIFI and others, with the ability to receive SMS alerts too.
